Warning: Sitting for long periods of time is not heart healthy.

The average person spends 9 hours a day sitting and although you may not smoke or have any desire to start, sitting for long periods of time has unhealthy effects on the body much in the same way that smoking does.

Okay so your lungs won't become black with tar from sitting, and your taste buds will not become desensitized to certain amounts of foods creating the need for you to pour on the salt. The point is sitting causes a lifestyle that is just as harmful on the body but in other ways that are comparable to the harmful effects of smoking.

Why?

Because sitting for long periods of time causes a sedentary lifestyle.

Sitting for long periods of time causes weight gain that leads to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, osteoporosis, deep-vein thrombosis, depression and dementia.

Sitting for long periods of time slows down the body's metabolism.  What does that mean? Metabolism is simply defined as the process in which your body uses or burns off the energy produced from the foods you eat. For your body to maintain proper weight ratios you need a certain amount of activity a day to help burn off any extra energy stored as calories to ensure that this energy does not become accumulative in a way that could become harmful and pose risks to your health.

Excess fat on your body increases levels of sugar in your blood, also increasing your blood pressure. To explain blood pressure it is simply the " pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels."An increase of blood pressure simply means that your body has to exert more pressure in order to circulate through blood vessels. Blood vessels do not stretch to accommodate any increased amount of fluid or extra amounts of particles contained within our blood, and this adds pressure that negatively effects the heart, not to mention the arteries.

How sitting negatively effects your body:

  • The electrical current in your leg muscles are slowly cut off.
  • Caloric activity decreases to about 1 calorie per minute.

  • Decreased enzyme production that helps break down fat by 90%.
  • Good cholesterol decreases by 20%
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Increase your physical activity.  Discover an activity that you like to do and stick with it.
Limit your sitting time.

  • When you are at the office, take 10 minutes three times a work day to do some stretching.
  • Incorporate some walking exercises on your lunch break.
  • Walk or bike to work.
  • When you are at home, limit the amount of time spent in front of the t.v, or playing video games.
  • Take a walk after dinner, form a walking group, join an exercise club to help keep you active on the days that you do not feel so motivated to move.
  • Opt for healthier food choices during meal and snack times. Limit your intake of pop, sugary drinks, and processed foods.
